About the gameWhat is Fistball?

Fistball is a fast-paced international sport combining teamwork, skill, and athleticism.

Fistball is a team sport played by two teams of five players on a grass or indoor court divided by a net. Similar to volleyball, players work together to return the ball over the net using their arm or clenched fist, with one bounce allowed between each touch.

Known for its powerful attacks, athletic defence, and tactical teamwork, fistball combines speed, skill, and strategy in a unique and exciting format. The sport is played competitively across Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, with international tournaments including World Championships and The World Games.

In New Zealand, fistball continues to grow as more players discover its strong community culture and international opportunities.

Fistball in New ZealandOur Story

From local beginnings to international competition.

Fistball was first introduced to New Zealand through a small group of passionate players and supporters, with some of the earliest organised games taking place in Christchurch. Since then, the sport has steadily grown through grassroots participation, volunteer support, and strong international connections.

The New Zealand Fistball Association was established to help guide the development of the sport nationally, creating opportunities for local competition, player development, and international representation.

Over time, New Zealand teams have competed in Asia-Pacific tournaments, World Championships, and other international events, helping raise the profile of the sport both locally and abroad. Regions such as Canterbury and South Canterbury have played an important role in the continued growth of the game.

Today, fistball in New Zealand continues to expand as new players, clubs, and communities discover the sport and contribute to its future development.
